No one wants a plumbing emergency. Not only is it an inconvenience to your routine, but it can be a hard hit to your checkbook! However, there are certain toilet maintenance tips you can do to prevent a major plumbing emergency later. Take a look!
Check Your Flapper
First, start with the tank at the back of the toilet. Sometimes, if there is a leak, the flapper (the rubber cover at the bottom of the tank) warps out of shape and allows water to leak. To see if it works, put a couple of food coloring into the tank and leave it overnight. If there’s color in the bowl the next morning, then your flapper needs to be replaced. Lucky for you, this is a simple and inexpensive fix!
Re-Caulk Your Toilet
The wax ring seal (not the waterproof caulking) inside the bottom of your toilet typically prevents leaking inside the toilet. When the wax seal deteriorates, caulk will keep the water in and you may not know about the leaking until later. However, this caulk prevents water from the shower, bath or overflow from getting under your toilet and rotting the floors. To protect from outside water damage, re-caulk around the toilet base.
Clean Your Tank
Over time, there can be buildup in your toilet tank if you’re not cleaning it properly. Whenever you flush, the bowl is refilled from water in the tank. If your tank is dirty, that water is feeding straight into your toilet bowl. This makes it difficult to keep clean making it difficult to clean and maintain. Clean your tank at least once every couple of months.
Clean Your Bowl
Of course, this is the one part of the toilet that typically gets cleaned the most. It is important that it is, though, because a clean bowl prevents corrosion and clogging. Not only this, but a clean toilet bowl helps you be able to indicate a bigger problem. Consider using a mixture of vinegar, baking soda and water to get the job done.
